My Amnesia Girl
► Monday, February 14, 2011 | 5:10 AM

Directed by: Cathy Garcia-Molina
Starring: John Lloyd Cruz, Toni Gonzaga, Ketchup Eusebio, Carlos Agassi, Beatrice Saw, Joross Gamboa, Gee-Ann Abrahan, JM de Guzman

The film definitely defines the usual Romantic-Comedy aspects. Overdosed with witty pick-up lines and comedic timing, it dwells into the superficial side of love. Like the characters, the film makes the viewers believe that love reigns over everything else and that it can cure even the blackest of hearts. It’s a full-on movie of enjoyment that, I guess, most Filipinos need, given how much problems we face in the society every day.
My Amnesia Girl Official Trailer

However, even in the midst of love that borders on naivety, the film miraculously does more than most of the films in its genre. The films develops into a hurting exchange of abandonment, lie and confusion amidst the enjoyment that those pick-up lines offer.

Apollo (John Lloyd Cruz) and Irene (Toni Gonzaga) during happier times.

Apollo (John Lloyd Cruz) meets Irene (Toni Gonzaga) at a speed dating event, and from then on, their relationship blossoms. Apollo asks Irene’s hand in marriage and she delightly agrees. But Apollo, having cold feet, leaves Irene at the altar, scarring her heart to the point of breaking. Years later, they unexpectedly meet in a grocery, where Irene makes up a lie that she has amnesia which means that all the memories of Apollo was erased. Apollo, seeing an opportunity to undo everything he has done to Irene, decided to make Irene fall in love with him again. The two become inseparable once more, but now facing a new hurdle which is Irene’s vengeful lie.

And they meet again.

The last scene, where they extended with the trademark exchange of witty pick-up lines until the end part of the credits, was kind of bittersweet. Yes, the lovers end up together, just like any romantic comedy movie. However, there is no assurance that fate would not rebuke Irene’s cruel lie. We just see Apollo and Irene enjoying their togetherness, not knowing if everything is right in their world. It’s kind of a hanging ending, where the audience could make up their own ending of a beautiful bittersweet story.

Romantics would sure devour this movie. Just make sure you have a box of tissues handy, because you’ll surely have an emotional ride throughout the movie. ;)
